Public Relations Intern

The Priority Center is seeking a dedicated Intern/Core Volunteer, specializing in Public Relations, to gain meaningful experience in the nonprofit sector. We are an Orange County nonprofit organization, located in Santa Ana, CA, working to end the generational cycle of trauma. Our mission is to deliver life-changing programs to assist people in crisis by giving them the tools and support necessary to end the generational cycle of trauma- including prevention of child abuse and neglect, through early intervention and mental health services and advocacy.

The Public Relations (PR) Intern/Core Volunteer will work with the Executive Director and Executive Assistant to create and maintain a positive public image. The intern/core volunteer will assist in the preparation and distribution of press releases, media kits, and other PR materials. They will maintain relationships with media and community members, and respond to questions from the public. Other obligations may include marketing and social media for The Priority Center.

Type: Unpaid Intern / Core Volunteer (College credit for interns, resume enhancement for core volunteers)

Commitment: Minimum of 3-5 months, 5-20 hours per week of service

** While these time frames work best for most students, all scheduling, including start/end dates and hours per week, is flexible and negotiated during the interview stage of the selection process. Hours are generally based on a student’s availability and school schedule.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in all stages of press release and media kits, including their preparation, creation, and distribution to media outlets.
  • Respond to questions and comments from the public and community organizations, with assistance from the Executive Director and Executive Assistant.
  • Strategically communicate with audience, donors, and the community to uphold and reaffirm The Priority Center’s mission and vision
  • Research and identify media opportunities (e.g. news outlets, social media platforms).
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage
  • Work with the Development (Social Media and Special Events) Interns/Core Volunteers to promote special events and utilize media platforms.

Qualifications:

  • Previous education (core volunteer) or current enrollment (intern) in:
    • Public Relations, Communications, or Marketing
    • Other similar field
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and PR tools
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Previous internship experience plus, but not required
  • Strong interest in non-profit sector

  • Ability to manage priorities and tasks including effective time management
  • Ability to perform responsibilities in a timely manner
